V.A. and Brigadier Jerry - Jwyanza
Jwyanza LP 1982 produced by Brigadier Jerry
I've always been a big fan of Brigadier Jerry. In my opinion, he is perhaps the most underrated deejay.
In large part, this must be due to how rare it was for him to go into the studio. Briggys rumor was spread primarily through sound tapes when he appeared with Jah Love Muzik - a sound system run by the Twelve Tribes of Judah. If you listen to one of these sessions you can not escape the tremendous charisma he possesses. He deejays, laughs, sings, speaks, rolls his "r" and the dance is constantly alive with such ease as to my knowledge very few deejays ever did (credit goes to General Echo, which probably was Briggys only peer in this regard).
Five tracks of Briggy! Three songs by Icho Candy! Danny Dread! Barry Brown! U-Roy! Euphoria!
Each of the twelve tracks are winners. I can feel that people throw themselves with the phrase All Killer No Filler a bit too easy but this modest little album is certainly on an entirely different level!
There is very little information available on the album. It seems that the songs were recorded or released in 1982. The best-known tracks are probably Briggys "Pain" and Icho Candy "Captain Selassie." The latter is an incredible rasta anthem which was extremely popular in the dance.
I have now found out later that the record label was run by Mikey "American" Riley, who was originally from Ocho Rios, but lived in the States. Rhythms, he had bought from Jo Jo in Channel One, with the exception of "Pain" which was produced by Phillip Fraser. The album was released around '86 and then only printed in 300 copies without cover. 150 copies Mikey kept and the remaining 150 he gave to Admiral HiFi in South Florida.
