Roman Stewart - Running Away From Love

From 1978, this mighty fine album takes me directly to the Caribbean when I close my eyes while listening. With hard hitting riddims, a tingling piano and effectively arranged brass section, a bluesy saxophone and of course the man himself singing his heart out this album makes my day shine brighter. I hope you will love it as much as I do.

Roman Stewart - Ruling And Controlling

Roman Stewart had a career that lasted for more than 30 years which included several big hits. He was well known and respected on the reggae scene in Jamaica and the United States. And yet, there has never been a Roman Stewart anthology or a "best of" collection; his work is scattered across dozens of hard to find records and a handful of CD compilations.
Roman recorded over 70 singles, but only has four albums to his name: Running Away From Love (1978), How Can I Love Someone (1979), Ruling And Controlling (1987) and Wisdom Of Solomon (2001).
As a performer, Roman was always a treat to watch -- as one reviewer wrote, Roman was a "cyclone of dreadlocks" on stage. He earned the nickname "Mr. Special", not only for his stage presence, but for being a really nice guy to everyone he met. The story goes that while living in New York he was well-known for simply "hanging out" at recording studios and record shops, and it would sometimes lead to a record being cut. Quite often he would perform for free at charity events or when his good friends Dennis Brown and Freddie McGregor were putting on a concert. He also would show up at house parties and sing acapella for everyone.
Sadly, Roman Stewart's later life was marked by substance abuse and poor health. He died in January 2004 in New York after suffering a heart attack on stage. Apparently as he lay in his hospital bed, he vowed to clean up his lifestyle but passed away before that could happen.

I am glad to present to you this album Ruling And Controlling, cause to me it's a real scorcher and a fine album. I am still looking for Roman's first two albums Running Away From Love, and How Can I Love Someone.
